Day 2 of my adventure, I'll start with food! Breakfast at the Scotman's Pack Inn was full English (no pic because I was starving and ate before I thought of a photo) After my hike in Hathersage, lunch was a delicious steak sandwich with an English breakfast tea, outside under an umbrella as the rain came down. And dinner was a late takeaway in Manchester of a Reese's Shake and Roadie's smashburger.
Day 2 was a spectacular day in the Peak District. I started the Stanage Edge hike after breakfast. It started off as a stroll through farmland. I walked beside cows and sheep. So wonderful and great conversationalists! Then the trail went into trees and I walked beside a bubbling brook. And then, it opened up to the limestone cliffs that make up Stanage Edge. It was pretty much straight up from a field of ferns and trees.
This was when the first rain showers arrived! Thankfully I was prepared with my rain gear for all 3 storms. The trail was slick but I took it slow. And when I got to the top and saw the amazing views over Hope Valley, I couldn't help but burst into joyful tears (one of MANY outbursts today... it was emotional).
I really felt like my inner Elizabethan heroine was out today! I adore Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre, and both have links to this area. So I felt very connected to the characters, and I felt very brave and adventurous and so very... well, heroic!
I conquered Stanage Edge and was marveled by the views, even when I could see a storm coming, and then stay up at the top of a cliff through it all. The trek down was along a road, then back through fields and alongside farms and vineyards. It was a marvelous day and I was so happy to have done it!
After a long hike, I had a delicious lunch before hopping on the train back to Manchester. I'm now settled in and relaxing after my busy few days. Tomorrow will be another travel day but it gets me to the start of the reason I'm here.... Hadrian's Wall and my Coast to Coast adventure!
